Bruce is such a rounded artist there is so much to get drawn to.  Personally I’m fascinated by his relationship with issues of faith – not an easy subject!  Both parts of ‘Preacher in the Ring’ showcase brilliant song-writing and address poisonous aspects of human life with devastating effect.

‘Fire on the Cross’ also deals with the harmful reality of obnoxious religious beliefs.  Intolerance and arrogance are not exclusive to any particular religion, but equally there are many people of faith who manage to transcend these temptations and live lives of selfless generosity.

I dedicate this song to one such human being.  I am a church pianist and have been privileged to play alongside Clive – our drummer – who bore chronic illness with great grace.  Clive died earlier this year and I miss you mate – hope you enjoy this, I know how much you hated conceit, as Wesley put it I ‘pour contempt on all my pride’.

Peace and Joy – Alan
